Evaluation F5 progenies of a cross between cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) and common wild rice(Oryza rufipogon Griff) for outcross promoting traits

Authors: Sarun Khumto; Benjawan Rerkasem; Sansanee Jamjod

Abstract: Cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) is self-pollinating, with flowering traits that exclude crosspollination. Hybrid rice seed production is therefore limited by low outcrossing rate between parental lines. To improve outcrossing ability in cultivated rice, common wild rice (O. rufipogon Griff.) was used as a source for outcrossing traits and backcrossed to Suphanburi 1 (SPR1) cultivated rice (BC2). In this study, F5 progenies of the backcross (BC2F5) were grown and evaluated for flowering traits in comparison with SPR1 parent. At flowering, florets were collected to measure the length of anthersand pistil. The anthers of SPR1 averaged 2.32 mm and pistil 1.50 mm, in length. The F5 population ranged 2.40 to 3.93 mm in anther length (3% to 170% of SPR1) and 1.80 to 3.40 mm in pistil length (20% to 127% of SPR1). The results showed that it is possible to improve floral traits to facilitate outcrossing in rice. Pistil length responded to selection than the length of anthers. Lines with high yielding, large anther and large stigma were selected, to be evaluate in the next generation, and ultimately to be deployed in breeding programs and hybrid seed production.

Title: ความหลากหลายทางพันธุกรรมและโครงสร้างประชากรของข้าววัชพืชในประเทศไทย; Genetic diversity and population structure of weedy rice in Thailand

Authors: Anupong Wongtamee; Chanya Maneechote; Benjavan Rerkkasem; Sansanee Jamjod

Abstract: Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) is one of most serious weeds in direct-seeded rice production. High genetic diversity and adaptability of weedy rice made it very difficult to control in the rice field. This study aim to assess genetic diversity and population structure of weedy rice populations from Lower North, Northeast and Central of Thailand in wet of 2009 using twelve microsatellite markers. Genetic diversity and population structure of weedy rice were determined and compared with seven common wild rice populations and seven check varieties commonly grown inthese regions. Weedy rice populations in this present study were hybrid between common wild rice and crop rice. The population structure of them was structured into 2 clusters according to its companion cultivated rice varieties of each region may caused by accumulating continuous backcrossing and gene flow of companion cultivated rice varieties to weedy rice and lead to the mimicry of weedy rice toward the crop. However, weedy rice populations were still maintained very high level of genetic diversity both within and between populations. Therefore, level of geneticdiversity and different of population structure of weedy rice from each region in this study was depending on companion crop rice varieties and gene flow between them.

Title: ชุดตรวจสอบการปลอมปนข้าวหอมมะลิ; Test kit for determination of contaminated Hom Mali rice

Authors: Janya Saengkiew; Kongsak Srikaew

Abstract: Amylose is one of the indicators to examine the purity of Hom Mali Rice. This researchdeveloped the test kit for determination of contaminated Hom Mali Rice. The test kit is based on the blue iodine’s color which is changed in according to amylose content. It was found that the suitable test kit composed of the steps for sample preparation which included preparing milled-white rice before they were subject to lipid removal by washing with ether. Iodine solution was used to develop the color for the prepared samples. The colors of the samples were compared with the established color bands and the levels of contaminations could be judged. The test kit has been evaluated and it was found to be effective.

Title: กระบวนการสร้างมูลค่าเพิ่มผลิตภัณฑ์ข้าวสารบรรจุถุงตามร้านค้าปลีกทันสมัยในประเทศไทย; Value added procession of rice products at modern trade in Thailand

Authors: Kittipong Trakoolchokumnuay

Abstract: Study of “The Value-Added Procession of Rice Products at Modern Trade in Thailand”aims to analyze the value-added procession of the rice products at modern trade in Thailand. This research is a qualitative research based on grounded theoretical methodology by using an in-depth interview with the 5 Key informants. The research methodology included the participant observation method with 20 rice consumers at modern trade. Additionally, the research also used the content analysis methodology to analyze texts and quality assurance symbols on the rice products. The results showed that the value-added procession of the rice products at modern trade inThailand consists of 5 points which are 1. a value quality added of rice 2. the rice cultivation 3. the rice procession and packaging 4. the quality assurance 5. social responsibility and environmental activities. All these 5 points are communicated through the texts and quality assurance symbols on the rice products. Furthermore, these can reflect an increase of the consumers’ demands, especially the healthy groups, elderly and patients whose pay more attention on the value added. Moreover, the marketing experts of rice producers in Thailand attempt to make the different products in order to expand the area of consumers. However, the problem has been occurred when the value of rice has been added and this makes the price get higher than usual for 3-5 times. The change of the rice taste can be affected some of the consumers that they will choose to consume some other food instead of the value-added rice.
