Waterlogging effects on survival of rice and some red rice seeds

Abstract: Survial of rice seed during waterlogging was studied in order to find out the approaches to eliminate volunteer plant or off types efficiently in case of changing plant variety in seed production. This study was conducted at Pathumthani Rice Research Center from 2001 to 2003. There are two experiments in this studies. First, dormant seeds were exposed to waterlogging soil condition. For waterlogging soil, seeds were either 0 or 5 cm depth below soil surface and water level was maintained at about 5-10 cm above the soil surface with 4 replications. Secondly, non dormant seeds(the seeds after releasing dormancy) were used in the same condition as above. Non dormant seeds were germinated 0,3,and 10 day before treatments. Six types of red rice seeds and 8 recommended variety of foundation seeds were used in the experiment. Red rice experiment was carried in pot condition but recommended rice seed experiment was carried in field condition. Germination (ability of seed to develop a normal seeding), dormancy after survival including dead seeds were recorded. Red rice seeds can survived longer than recommended variety rice seeds. Red rice died only 50% after 49 day waterlogging. Survived seeds could germinate only 20% and the remaining 10-17% was still dormant. Germination and dormancy percentage of recommended variety rice seeds after survival decreased but dead seed percentage increased during waterlogging. Rice seeds on the soil surface died 51% and 57% after 7 and 14 day waterlogging respectively but the seeds at 5 cm. depth below soil surface died 44% and 48% after 7 and 14 day waterlogging respectively. Survived seeds can germinate approximately 30-40% under favorable condition and the remaining 10-20% was still dormant. Rice seeds approximately died 70-80% after 56-63 day waterlogging and survived seeds were able to germinate 10-20% under favorable condition and the remaining 10% was still dormant. There is only small different of dormant seed percentage between seeds at 0 and 5 cm depth under waterlogging soil. Moreover, it was found that non dormant seeds with 0 and 3 day old seedlinf which were buried 5 cm depth under soil surface died 56% and 86% respectively after 7 day waterlogging and increased to 93% and 100% death respectively after 14 day waterlogging. Furthermore, 10 day old seedlings which were buried 5 cm depyh under soil surface died 99-100% after 7-14 day waterlogging. For non dormant seed on the soil surface, there is variation of seed death due to germinability of some seeds.
