Abstract

The objective of commercial seed production technology in farmer′s field project was to promote farmers to product rice seed for sale through seed production in farmer′s fields with integrated technology and public relations, and to link seed production farmer groups with seed sellers. Consequently, seed production in the target area, Phichit province, would be improve and the farmer′s income would increase. To achieve those, five activities were conducted. The first activity was to survey rice seed selling situation and provide seed production knowledge to seed stores keepers. There were 71 rice seed stores in Phichit province, mostly located in Muang, Taphanhin and Potalae districts. Main sources of seed came from Chainat followed by Suphanburi. Twenty varieties of rice seeds were available, Suphanburi1 and Chainat1 were the top variety sold, followed by Suphan35 and Phitsanulok2, and eight varieties were not recommended. The good quality rice seed production and sale promotion seminar was held in order to raise the quality of rice seed, and 102 people involved in seed business attended. The second activity was to train 253 farmers in rice seed production with a study tour of seed inspection at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. The third activity was to conduct 20 rice seed production′s fields with integrated technology as learning centers which cover 7 districts 14 sub-districts and 20 villages. The fourth activity was to have two good agricultural practice and rice seed production field days, in which 820 farmers participated. The fifth activity was to produce 40 tons of foundation seed and distributed them to the farmers under the project for producing stock seeds. As a result of the activities in 2006, there were 2139 tons of good quality rice seed for sale which exceeded the target at 1800 tons set under the strategy plan of Phichit province. In addition, the prices of seed at 20-28%MC was 6300-7030 bath/ton which was more expensive than 1500-2000 bath/ton.
