Abstract: Rice planting area in Mae Hong Son Province is 165,582 rai. The paddy field area is 83,083 rai. In present, the popular rice varieties are Khao Dawk Mali 105 and RD21. Because of non-glutinous rice is the staple food and the farmer grows for self consumption. The serious problem in rice growing season is blast disease which those two popular varieties are succestible. It annually infects, damages rice yield and cause production cost increasing due to fungicide application. Varietal improvement for resistance to diseases can economically solve this problem with more convenience. PRE91001-SPT-17-1-1-3-2-3 is the promising line which has been bred between IR54017-131-1-3-2 and SPR 60 at Prae rice research center. It had been selected, observed and grown in intra-station yield trial plot at Chaingmai rice research center. Its grain yield had been widely evaluated in inter-station yield trial plot and in farmers' field yield trial plot at Phrae rice research center, Chiangmai rice research center, Chiangrai rice research center and Mae Hong Son rice research center. It's a new plant type irrigated rice variety which is 126 centimeter in height, photoperiod insensitive, medium maturity (124-130 days), erect tiller, green blades colour, compact panicle and long uppermost internode. The average yield in inter-station yield trial plot at Mae Hong Son rice research center in 2002-2004 is 672 kilogramme per rai and the average yield in farmers' field yield trial plot in 2002 is 501 kilogramme per rai. The yield is not significantly different from standard check varieties, PTT1 and SPR60. The grain physical properties are non-glutinous rice, slender shape grain, straw hull colour, less chalkiness, good milling quality. The cooking quality is soft cooked rice and aroma. It resist to blast disease and high yilding as same as RD21. So it is an alternative variety for farmers to increase yield and food security.
