Abstract

Rice improvement for irrigated paddy in upper northern Thailand aims for photoperiod insensitive varieties with accepted physical and chemical quality by traders and consumers, which including high yield, long-slender grain with good milling and cooking quality. In addition, resistance to major diseases and insects are also needed. Moreover, variety with strong culms and erect plant type, resistant to lodging and grain shattering is required for combined-harvesting machine. Additionally, variety with optimum growth period for upper northern environment with acceptable milling and cooking quality by farmers is also desired. In order to achieve such variety, rice improvement needed to be done through breeding and selection under targeted environment. A promising glutinous rice: PTT'02-SPT-G1 is selected from off type character of Pathum Thani 1 in the dry season 2002. Observation and yield trials were later done consecutively and it produced relatively higher yield with good cooking quality as compared to Sanpahtawng 1. It is a photoperiod insensitive line with 135-140 days duration, strong culms and erect plant type with 110 cm. height suitable for combined-harvestor. It was moderately resistant (MR) to rice gall midge and moderately susceptible (MS) to blast. Average grain yield is 564 kg/rai with 26.98 gm. TGW. Grain shape of brown rice is 7.52 mm length, 2.16 mm. width and 1.77 mm. thick. It is recommended for cooking of Thai local dessert, Khao' Niaw Moon.
