Abstract: Black glutinous rice is a type of traditional rice having a unique feature for its black or dark red seed coats. Genetic diversity for several useful characters exists among local varieties. The objectives of this research were to evaluate morphological characters, group the varieties with similar characters and assess yield performance of these varieties. At the beginning, 60 local varieties of black glutinous rice were sown in a systematic arrangement at Sakon Nakhon Rice Research Center under rainfed lowland condition in 2004. Twenty five morphological and cooking quality traits were collected. A dendrogram was constructed using morphological and cooking quality data indicated 3 groups on botanical characters. Another experiment was carried out to evaluate agronomic performance of black glutinous rice. A total sixteen black glutinous rice varieties were tested under rainfed lowland conditions in 2005 at three locations, namely Sakon Nakhon Rice Research Center, Ubon Rachathani Rice Research Center and Chumpae Rice Research Center. Data were recorded for yield, number of panicles per hill, plant height, days to 75 percent flowering, spikelet fertility persentage and 1,000 seeds weight. Significant differences were observed for all characters evaluated for each location.
