Abstract: Ratooning, a rice cultivation technique, to take advantage over main crop rice stubble by develop viable tiller/axillary/lateral or nodal bud which in dormancy stage to be ratoon rice tillers and crops. In the Upper-North, transplanting was practiced rather than broadcasting one, and gave difference main crop stubble. These must be studied to verify the effect of stubble management and cropping season to growth and yield of the following ratoon crop. The experiment was conducted at Phan Rice Experiment Station, Chiangrai (presently: Chiangrai Rice Research Center) in 2002-2003 wet and dry season. Split plot in RCB with 2 main plots (stubble lodging and stubble cutting), 3 sub plots-rice varieties: Khoa Chao Hom Suphanburi (HSPR), Pafthumthani 1 (PTT1) and Sanpatong 1 (SPT1). The result showed that lodging and cutting gave statistically no difference ratoon tillers produced (4.5-4.7 t/hill from wet season main crop and 6.2-7.1 t/hill from dry season main crop), but SPT1 gave maximum ratoon tillers (5.5-6.5t/hill) from wet season main crop stubble and HSPR produced highest tillers number (6.9-8.4 t/hill) from dry main crop stubble. Main crop rice produced similar grain yield of 649 and 675 kg/rai in wet and dry season respectively, and among variety: SPT1 gave the highest grain yield. Ratoon rice crop from wet season main crop gave very low grain yield (218-244 Kg/rai) and not differ in both between varieties or between stubble managements. But the higher grain yield was gathered by ratoon rice crop from dry season main crop, especially SPT1 with cutting stubble was produced 549 kg/rai (64 percent of main crop yield) and with lodging stubble which yielded 571 kg/rai (74 percent of main crop yield). It is concluded that suited rice variety for ratooning rice cultivation in Upper-north is SPT1 and cutting stubble is more practicable than lodging one.
