| Abstract: | Local rice variety development is an activity under rainfed lowland rice breeding program for the northeast. Because there was diverse condition of rainfed lowland, thus required diverse rice varieties suitable for each growing condition. The objectives of this activity were to select and purify local rice varieties and develop practical technology of selection, varietal maintainance and seed production for farmers. The final output of this activity, if possible, is to develop seed production of local rice varieties in community. There were 2 approaches, conducted by breeder and farmer group. Activities operated by breeder, there were 2 varieties, Khao Jao Dang and Niaw Kiaw Ngoo. These 2 varieties were under evaluation for grain yield and farmer acceptance. For activities operated by farmer, this a new approach which there were several partners participate including NGOs group, university and local organization. After 1 year of work, it was found that farmers required diverse rice varieties different across locations. |
