Abstract

Phitsanulok Rice Research Center have concentrated the research on improvement of rainfed rice varieties in order to serve the farmers' need. This resulted in a variety called Phitsanulok 80 obtaining from the three-way cross of Supanburi 90/IR56//RD27 since 1991. Characteristic selection was carried out continuously and the promising line, PSL92147-1-2-4, was finally selected. The lines was gone through the steps of intra-station, inter-station, farmers' field yield trial and yield stability. It was found that the line provided an average of 642 kg/rai (4.01 t/ha) in the farmers' field which was 9 percent higher than 589 kg/rai (3.68 t/ha) obtained from RD27 and 31 percent greater than Khao Ta Haeng 17 which yielded 488 kg/rai (3.05 t/ha). It had a high yield stability and could be widely grown in the lower north and the central. The rate of N response was 8 kg N/rai ( 50 kg/ha). It is a non-glutinous, photoperiod sensitive, medium maturity that is ideal to be harvested approximately in early December. The plant type and flag leaf are erect with strong stem, long neck and compact panicle. The height is 141 cm on average. It has low chalkiness. The brown rice has a slender shape with 7.45 mm long. It has an excellent milling quality, low amylose, low gel consistency with low gel temperature, therefore resulted in a soft cooked rice. There are a few disadvantages i.e. susceptible to Brown Planthopper, moderately susceptible to blast and bacterial blight.
