Abstract

Thirty four samples of Jek Chuey: a local rice variety from Sara Buri province were collected in 2002. PTTC02019-1, a rice line had been derived from those collection by mass selection technique at Pathumthani Rice Research Center. The line was photoperiod sensitive that had flowering date during 1-5 November and 1-5 December for harvesting date. Grain yield of the line measured in Sao Hai farmer fields and Pathumthani Rice Research Center was about 700-800 kg/rai using transplanting method and 500-600 kg/rai using germinated seed broadcasting. This line was not responded to nitrogen fertilizer rates (0 to 15 kilograms N per rai) and gave moderately resistant to white back planthopper (Sogatella furcifera) and susceptible to blast disease (Pyricularia grisea). PTTC02019-1 was 184 cm plant height with green leaf sheath and leaf blade. The ligule and collar were light green. Stigma and flower tip were white. Sterile lemma was rice straw yellow color and awnless lemma. The flag leaf angle was descending. The panicle length was 32.8 cm. Number of grain per panicle was approximately 363 grains. The dormancy period of seed was 6-7 weeks. The paddy rice was straw colored with 10.85 mm long, 2.64 mm wide and 2.07 mm thick. 100-grain weight was 2.74 grams. Long and slender brown rice with 7.62 mm long, 2.16 mm wide and 1.83 mm thick. Milling quality was 51 percent for head rice. Chemical quality was 27.8 percent amylose content, soft gel consistency and medium gelatinization temperature. About 40 percent of the testers preferred this line. Approximately 54 percent of the testers voted as hard cooked rice, and 46 percent of the testers voted as soft cooked rice.
