Abstract

Brown planthopper (BPH) has become a major insect pest for irrigated areas in the Lower Northern area of Thailand due to continuous rice cropping in large area approximately 2.8 million rai (4,480 ha.). Recently, Phitsanulok Rice Research Center obtained an photoperiod insensitive promising line with resistant to BPH, high yield and good quality. CNT96028-21-1-PSL-1-1 (CNT85059-27-1-3-2/SPR60//RP217-635-8) produced the maximum yield of 904 kg/rai (5.65 t/ha) which was higher than SPR1, PSL2, SPR3, RD29 and CNT1 by 16, 8, 23, 1 and 8 percent, respectively. Apart from being resistant to BPH, the line was also resistant to rice blast. Moreover, its grain and milling quality (46.6 percent head rice) were excellent and similar to those of PSL2 and CNT1. It had high amylose content with soft gel consistency resulting in fluffy when cooked. It is an alternative for the farmers in the Lower North area who prefer high-yield variety with good cooking quality and resistant to BPH and rice blast.
