| Abstract: | Black glutinous rice has long been involved in the Thai way of life. There is now a rapid development of black glutinous rice research. The trade in both domestic and foreign markets is getting to be attentive. Both public and private institutions carry out research and development on various commercial utilization of the extracts from black glutinous rice seed integuments such as food processing industry, dietary supplement products, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Black glutinous rice is also used as souveniors or home decorations. The Rainfed Lowland Rice Varietal Research and Development Project in Northeastern Thailand recognizes the importance of utilization and production of suitable black glutinous rice varieties in the communities. In particular, Chumpae Rice Research Center has initiated a varietal study of traditional black glutinous rice for producing the glutinous rice roasted in bamboo joints which is an OTOP goods of Chumpae district. Until now, seven varieties of black glutinous rice have been selected. They have an average yield of 417 kilograms per rai, 154 centimeters plant height, 10 panicles per hill, 15 to 30 October heading date, satisfied level of blast resistance, and straw-to black-colored seeds. These varieties can be promoted to farmers to use in major rice cropping season. Some of them are photoperiod-insensitive and capable of planting as second rice or with other crops in an intercropping system to be the farmers' supplementary income. |
