Abstract

Changes in farmers' practices result in growing modern rice cultivars instead of the traditional ones. Most traditional rice varieties have been collected for conservation whereas some of them lost. Consequently, there is a concept of direct use of traditional rice by improving the cultivars suitable for specific planting areas in order to meet the farmers' demand. In relation to this-Phattalung Rice Research Center has continued its effort in developing new rice varieties from the traditional donors. One mechanism is to establish collaboration between the Phattalung RRC with local communities and the farmers' network on the participation in recovering traditional rice cultivation. This approach is conducted in cooperation with private organizations for driving local rice genetic conservation activity. Another mechanism is focused on supporting research study and nutritional analysis of traditional rice resources for their utilization in pharmaceutical and cosmetic product industries.
