Abstract

Interspecific hybridization for brown planthopper resistance was conducted, using SPR88096-17-3-2-2 (Oryza sativa) as the female parent and the wild rice GS.No.18866 (Oryza punctata), a source of brown planthopper resistance, as the male parent. 31 hybrid seeds were obtained from a total of 1,152 pollinated florets, yielding 2.69% successful pollination. The F1 hybrids showed intermediate plant height and tiller morphology when compared with the two parents. Flowers were small similarly to those of O. punctata with short awns. The stigma was dark purple similarly to that of O. punctata while the O. sativa parent had white stigmas. The hybrids were found sterile. Their seeds were small, short, shriveled and unviable due to defective chromosome pairing as the hybrid had either an ABC or AC chromosome set. To induce chromosome doubling, the F1 hybrid plants were treated with 0.03 percent colchicine for 1 and 4 days and 0.06 percent colchicines for 3 and 4 days.
