Use of chest girth and shoulder body length to estimate body weight in female thoroughbreds

Abstract

Thirty non-pregnant female Thoroughbreds, liveweight between 390-516 kg and over three years of age, were weighted (kg) in squarely standing position. Five body measurements (cm), for calculation of predicted liveweight (kg), have been recorded: height at wither (HW), shoulder body length (SL) and elbow body length (EL) were measured by using an equine height meter stick. Subsequently, chest girth (CG) and umbilical girth (UG) length were assessed by means of length tape. Multiple regression analysis of weight on all possible body measurements was calculated. The Pearson correlation coefficients (rho) of liveweight and HW, SL, EL, CG, UG were 0.63, 0.85, 0.88, 0.83 and 0.75 respectively. In addition, there were high intercorrelation values of SL with EL, CG with UG, CG with EL which in that order were 0.92, 0.74 and 0.71. The rho values of liveweight with EL were more or less the same as of liveweight with SL. The CG showed the stronger association with liveweight than that of UG thus we put the CG in the model of multiple linear regression. Adding the shoulder body length caused the suitable fit equation for liveweight prediction. Therefore, the fit prediction equation for female Thoroughbreds was found to be: liveweight (kg) = (3.339*CG (cm)) + (3.768*SL (cm)) - 694.427, (R** (2) = 0.87, p less than 0.001). We concluded that the female Thoroughbred liveweight can be estimated from body measurements and that chest girth and shoulder body length are convenient body measurement predictor.

ม้าพันธุ์เธอโรเบรดเพศเมียที่ไม่ตั้งท้อง อายุ 3 ปีขึ้นไป จำนวน 30 ตัว ชั่งน้ำหนักได้ค่าระหว่าง 390-516 กิโลกรัม และได้ทำการบันทึกการวัดขนาดของลำตัว (เซนติเมตร) เพื่อใช้ในการทำนายน้ำหนักตัว คือ ความสูงที่ตะโหงก (HW) ความยาวหัวไหล่ถึงก้น (SL) ความยาวข้อศอกถึงก้น (EL) โดยใช้ไม้วัดส่วนสูงม้า และ ความยาวรอบอก (CG) ความยาวรอบเอว (UG) โดยใช้สายวัด ค่าน้ำหนักตัวและค่าขนาดลำตัว ถูกนำมาหาความสัมพันธ์โดยวิธีการวิเคราะห์ความถดถอยเชิงพหุ ได้ค่าสัมประสิทธิ์สหสัมพันธ์เพียร์สัน (rho) ระหว่างน้ำหนักตัวและค่าขนาดลำตัวของ HW SL EL CG UG เป็น 0.63 0.85 0.88 0.83 0.75 ตามลำดับ และพบค่า ระหว่างค่าขนาดลำตัวด้วยกันเองที่สูงคือ SLกับEL CGกับUG และ CGกับEL เป็น 0.92 0.74 และ 0.71 จากการใช้ค่า CG ร่วมกับ SL ในสมการ จะได้สมการถดถอยเชิงพหุที่เหมาะสมจากการวัดขนาดของลำตัวในการทำนายน้ำหนักม้าพันธุ์เธอโรเบรดเพศเมียคือ น้ำหนักตัว (กิโลกรัม) = (3.339 * CG (เซนติเมตร)) + (3.768 * SL (เซนติเมตร)])- 694.427, (R**(2) = 0.87, P LT 0.001) จากการศึกษาครั้งนี้สามารถใช้การวัด CG และ SL มาใช้ในการทำนายน้ำหนักตัวม้าพันธุ์เธอโรเบรดเพศเมียได้ในช่วงน้ำหนักดังกล่าว
