Abstract

Sew Gliang is upland photosensitive glutinous rice and widely grown on highland area of Loei province with approximately 200-300 kg/rai average yield. Most upland farmers grow this rice with dry seeded method. However, there is very high variation within variety. Grain yield obtained from each field in this province is different as the diverse of variety characteristic and use for local consumption and the rest are sold via community rice center in the village.Therefore 5 research centers in the Upper Northeastern part of Thailand conducted an upland rice research and development project during 2008 – 2010. Fifty-six Sew Gliang rice samples collected from the farmers and selected specific character as farmer accept were grown and evaluated. Evaluation have been done for rice adaptation and farmer acception for its agricultural characteristic, grain quality, cooking and eating qualities. As the result, we were able to select the upland Sew Gliang rice variety which suit to farmer demand. Specific characters of this rice variety are erected plant type, yellow color stem, dark green leaf with long and slender shape, flowering approximately on September 22th, moderately strong culm, 7 panicles per hill. This rice variety yielded approximately 270 kg/rai, the hull color is straw, brown rice grain shape is medium with 7-8 mm long, 2.6 mm wide and 2.0 mm thick. Cooked rice is soft and fragrance. Advantage of this rice variety is short growth duration and resistant to blast disease (score 2). This variety will be proposed to be certified in near future to be recommended for farmer group who produce Sew Gliang rice variety in Nam-yen village, Ampher Dansai, Loei province.
