Abstract

Local colored rice varieties in Southern Region had been collected by Pattani Rice Research Center since 1996. There were 89 accessions collected to be evaluated and classified by their morphological and agronomic characteristics. Desired accessions had been purified through pure line selection procedure and later been tested for resistance to leaf blast disease. Meanwhile, selected pure lines had been compared on their yield, agronomic characters and grain qualities. Two promising lines of black glutinous rice had been achieved. The first line was designated as PTNC96004-49 selected from local variety “Khao’ Niaw Dam Chaw Mai Pai”. The second line was PTNC96051-37 selected from local variety “Khao’ Niaw Dam Maw”. PTNC96004-49 (Khao’ Niaw Dam Chaw Mai Pai) was photoperiod insensitive glutinous variety with stiff erect plant type and 135 centimeter plant height. Its average yield was 364 kilogram per rai with 7 panicles per hill. Its growth duration was 155 days. Its leaf blade was dark green color. Its distinct traits were clustered spikelet of 3 spikelets on 1 rachis with black tip and straw colored hull. Its purple black colored brown rice contained 5.22% amylose. This line was susceptible to leaf blast and 5,000 panicles had been selected to produce anticipated breeder seed. PTNC96051-37 (Khao’ Niaw Dam Maw) was photoperiod insensitive glutinous variety with stiff erect plant type and 139 centimeter plant height. Its average yield was 356 kilogram per rai with 7 panicles per hill. Its growth duration was 140 days. Its leaf blade was mixed color of green and purple. Its paddy was straw color with brown furrow. Its black colored brown rice contained 5.33% amylose. This line was moderately susceptible to leaf blast and 3,500 panicles had been selected to produce anticipated breeder seed.
