Abstract: This study was carried out at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center during 2008-2010 aiming for minimizing rice blast severity by growing 2 rice lines differed in blast resistance to broaden rice genetics. In 2008, resistance screening was performed on 2 sets of blast resistant rice lines derived from KDML105 having different donors of resistance developed by Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center. Ten selected blast isolates were inoculated one at a time onto 21 day-old seedlings at 50,000 spores/ml and kept at 25 oC in the controlled room for 7 days before assessment. Since selection criteria were based on resistance to half of the tested isolates and an ideal pair should have similar maturity, therefore, none of the lines have been selected. In 2009, the third set consisted of 15 improved resistant rice lines derived from KDML105 having Jao Hawm Nin and DHL-279 as resistance donors, was tested in the controlled room using the same procedures as in 2008. Three lines designated UBN03005-6-3-26-10-49-10, UBN03004-3-16-20-20-40-14 and UBN03004-3-16-20-11-100-4 were chosen and tested further in the greenhouse for comparison between pair and single line growing having KDML105 and RD15 as susceptible checks. The experimental design was CRD having 7 treatments with 4 replicates. Seeds of pair treatments were mixed and pre-germinated at 1:1 w/w before transplanting at 2 plants/hill. Single line treatments were also used 2 plants/hill. Blast inoculation was performed at tillering and flowering stages. Overall, negligible symptom was observed at tillering while 0-5.6% neck blast severity was recorded at harvest. The best treatment was growing UBN03005-6-3-26-10-49-10 together with UBN03004-3-16-20-11-100-4 since it showed neither leaf nor neck blast compared to 5.6 and 1.7% neck blast severity in KDML105 and RD15, respectively. Repeated experiment was carried out in 2010 and results had shown the same trend as in 2009 when growing UBN03005-6-3-26-10-49-10 together with UBN03004-3-16-20-11-100-4 had the lowest neck blast severity being 6.5% compared to 18.4% and 13.8% recorded in KDML105 and RD15. Results have shown a great potential for minimization of rice blast severity through the mixed growing of 2 sister lines having similar agronomic characters but different resistance to rice blast.
