Abstract

Research investigated riceseed production by participation of farmer group and seed production recommended by the Department of Rice in comparison with rice seed production by Ban Ma -Tub Nam community enterprise in Bangpahun district of Auyutthaya province. The experiment conducted in dry season 2011 in collaboration with three farmer representatives. Research focused on rice seed quality and economic returns. For rice seed quality, seed production recommended by Rice Department was about thesame quality as seed production by participation of activefarmer groups and quality was higher than seed production commonly practiced by farmers where it produced more number of mixed with other rice varieties and red rice seeds. Comparing rice seed quality between seed production commonly practiced by farmers andseed production by participation of farmer groups have found that seed production by participation of farmer groups produced lower number of red seeds (4.37%) and higher seed germination ( 55.96%) which fall in line with rice seed production standards. Considering costs and return, seed production recommended by Rice Department has higher costs than seed production by participation of farmer groups and seed production commonly practiced by farmers because of higher cost of seed selection resulted in higher return when compared withthe old method which produced low quality of seeds and sell to the Income Guarantee program. Therefore, rice seed production participationby farmer groups should be introduced to farmers because quality of seed is equal with seed production recommended by Rice Department and lower costs when compared with seed production commonly practiced by farmers.
